Shiver me TBMbers! The Great Comp Showdown Thread!

No, HK is not behind Acid Dreams, and what I gonna tell you about AD is one of the weirdest stories in this world of comp. Don't have time tonight for this, but I'll do tomorrow, long story and cool pics to follow.
My main problem is actually to avoid mentioning the real names here on the web, I'll hence use pseudos and I guess you'll recognize who is who. To wet your appetite, seems like I've actually been interviewing a living-dead, or at least someone that should have been dead and buried since ages and who turned up as well alive. At least his ghost was able to type the emails he sent me. Weird I tell ya.
Exciting. I always wanted to know about the origins of this comp. To me it was always one of the most essential. Not because of the top quality throughout, but because of the coolness of being a manifesto for Acid Punk as a genre.
Very interesting investigations here. And very entertaining, too. Thanks, Sylvain.

Yeah, I kinda just lost the fourth digit. I did so on all the results. Should I have not done that?

here's some final infos concerning the early and first pressings of BFTG comps, right from Tim's mouth ! :

"hey sylvain - yeah, i got married in may 1983 to a gal named caroline from paris and i moved to paris in oct 1983 and we pressed 500 each of the first 2 bftg's in france, with her dad's swank house as an address.
we had a hard time selling em, so we drove most of them to hans kesteloo's in tubingen, germany and he bought 90% of them...
that was a funny trip - we borrowed caroline's father's 1965 mustang and crammed the trunk with 800 lps and prayed that the customs wouldn't catch on and tax us!
tim "

cheers,
sylvain

Somewhere I heard that Tim W. is planning to remaster all the BFTG comps using some of the newer technology for even better sound. Any truth to this rumor?

From a business point of view it doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do but as a fan I hope it's true.

This exhaustive breakdown of Tim's old fire & brimstone spur-of-the-moment rants is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Thanks

I don't get this shit!!!!
You wanna have the original pressings of COMPILATION-albums????
Aren't even the 1st pressings of a Pebbles or BFTG album kinda compilation-reissues of the REAL originals??
I would go for them, the 7"-es. Quite an expensive hobby though!!!

to get this straight:
the first pressing was 500 copies (including the bonus "The Witch" cover by Mono Man backed by a Mission Of Burma or 2 - Erik L added deadwax scratches to it to make it sound like an acetate), of which there were 66 that i hand-painted the "back from the grave" front text with glow-in-the-dark paint, and these were reserved for mailorder only sales (plus i gave pals a few copies).
around 8 copies were actually mailordered, and i forgot about em until july 2000, when i found the remaining copies in a dark closet while emptying the old family house in preparation for its demolition.

Speaking of the bonus track ... we tossed that on as a joke on the first pressing of 1000 discs. That was actually a version that I produced in '78 that included Jeff Connolly (DMZ/Lyres) on vocals, Roger Miller (later of Mission of Burma) on bass and lead guitar, Boby Bear on drums (he played with Roger, Clint Conley and me in the pre-MOB Boston art punk band Moving Parts), and myself on guitar and piano. Don't think many people know about the cut nor the personnel involved. We got a good chuckle out of including that mystery track... »

Did you find the scoop on the vol.2 bonus track origin?

Seventh edition
1986

Sleeve idem 5th pressing, but with inverted blue / red colors., label idem 6th pressing
CR 001, insert
Track listing idem 3rd pressing

Given the Hamburg-address, I don't think this can be from 1986. Went to Tim's "Cool & Crazy" store here first in late 1990 and he hasnt been in town long before, I seem to remember. Or are you implying there were surplus records and he printed new sleeves w/ German address after moving over?

Stamp collector or not: very much enjoyed that, Sylvain. Looking forward to your Acid Dreams revelations!

No, he's german, probably now retired or about to retire, as he was "where it's at" during the mid-60s, i.e in the USA... reason why he's been able to set a comp with such gems as soon as the late-70s, outta his own records, from what you gonna read.

we're talking about C.H. from H., right? What role did "dirty harry" play according to your research?

what I heard is: C.H. did Acid Dreams with Dirty Harry helping out a little bit. Then C.H. dropped out of the collector world and Harry took over the name later doing vol.2 & 3 (and bragging about being the guy behind Vol.1 as well), possibly along with other comps. What do you mean by "German bootleg crew"? H.-H. P. from B. and H.S. from W.?

Cool info on BFTG #1.
Back in the 80s we thought it was Harry, singer of Blackberry/Broken Jug, who did Acid Dreams. But somebody told me it wasn't him...

Sixth edition :
No date (but 1985 or 1986)
US pressing (Crypt USA, 1409 W Magnolia, Burbank, CA 91506)
Sleeve idem 5th pressing, but yellow label, with the 1983 date mentioned
CR 001, Insert
Track listing : idem 3rd pressing

Some of the date info is wrong. Rebel Teen #3 was not published until spring 1988 so the last posted version with the liner notes would be after 1988. Also, the Alarm Clocks were not IDed until mid 1985 and I don't think I got the pic of the band until late 1985 or 1986.

One thing I still haven't seen made clear is who was behind the Demention Of Sound? Chap's got a good ear for sure, along with some less admirable qualities...

Demention Of Sound - LP

Side 1
1 The Juveniles - Bo Diddley (Norman, OK, U.S.A.)
2 The Syndicats - Crawdaddy Simone (London, U.K.)
3 The Wranglers - Liza Jane (U.K.)
4 The Clique - She Ain't No Good (London, U.K.)
5 The Untamed - I'll Go Crazy (London, U.K.)
6 The Wild Oats - Walking The Dog (Leiston, U.K.) *

Side 2
1 The Sorrows - You've Got What I Want (Coventry, U.K.)
2 The Primitives - You Said (Oxford, U.K.)
3 The Bo Street Runners - Bo Street Runner (Harrow, U.K.)
4 The Four + 1 - Don't Lie To Me (London, U.K.)
5 The Mark Four - I'm Leaving (Cheshunt, U.K.)
6 The Mark Four - Hurt Me If You Will (Cheshunt, U.K.)
7 The Exiles - Don't Leave (U.K.) *

Initials L.W.

Side one w/ a tweak; I wouldn't have included the Untamed, with their rather pedestrian James Brown cover. The Dave Berry version of "My Baby Left Me" on Decca would've worked better to my ears.

Demention of Sound 1.JPG

Side 2 adjusted to allow for a mightier Sorrows track. And as the 6 copies pressed Exile's acetate on OAK has to date proven elusive I'd substitute the killer cover of Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop by Chicago Line on Philips.

Demention Of Sound 2.JPG

As regards less admirable qualities, well, regrets? I've had a few....

One thing I still haven't seen made clear is who was behind the Chocolate Soup series and Demention Of Sound? Chap's got a good ear for sure, along with some less admirable qualities...

Who did Sklash/Good Roots/All Cops In Delirium comp? The best SOUNDING boot of its time imho. And the line up ain't shabby either.

Among all mysterious '80s comps, Good Roots is probably the most mysterious one. Still have my copy here, but the vinyl seemed to be degrading with repeat plays so I transferred it to tape and then digital. I think it's from Germany? Sylvain probably knows. Love the fact that they include tracks from 1976 and 1977 next to Skip & The Creations bad fratrock. :)
