Huh.
At first I post my age, and people laud me for being one of the few from my generation to listen to this genre. And here you are telling me that I have no taste and that I should give up on "trying to like 60s garage". Wouldn't that be a shame if I did?
Also, you're not really in a position to judge my tastes based on TWO compilations.

Brilliant compilation! All 45 tracks, but not all U.S. acts - Cerebrum were from Spain, Gold from Belgium, and the Village S.T.O.P. from Canada.

(Pebbles Vol 5 Side 1 might be the greatest set of songs, scored a 10.9984 - without a rating for the Magi track)

My wife'll kill me if I turn on the light and hack out numbers in the swedish night, but my guess is that they'd end up in the perimeter from 6 up to a 7,2 on that She's A Pest TS volume.

I think above 3 are among the weakest parts in a pretty strange series. I love them, I am not sure if the creators succeeded in what the wanted to accomplish. It might have been better to mix the different styles on each volume instead of making separate style studies.
It almost work the same way on the really, really great parts of the series: they are sometimes so action packed that you actually long for some 6 to 7 pointer relief.
 
Truly speaking, just my very personal opinion, but I wonder if Mike was doing himself a favor when a lot of the attention his immense work gets is focused on this rating game. It's hard for me to see music in general and especially this kind of music treated as numbers in a rating system. I don't want to cause any kind of uproar here. I just have to say it.

Apart from that "I Was A Teenage Caveman" will probably score very high in this race here.

Meh, it is simply me getting the feel of the book. I think I flipped through the pages of fuzz, acid & flowers for years before I really could absorb the information.

So don't forget who's doing this, juz lil' ol' lightweight Lee. :oops:
 
Ah, this is a thread I've been waiting for my whole life, combining the great world of classic comps with "the cold clear world of the intellect". Yay! :confused:

Regarding the "Best Of" comps like Teenage Caveman, I would simply skip them as their agenda was different from the true collector comps. Otherwise the idea to award bonus, or penalize, comps depending on the number of repeats is a good solution. An interesting thing is also how much of the comp material that is still unique *today*, even if it doesn't have direct bearing on the quality of the original comp.

You will notice that MTM's non-truncated calculations yield significantly higher averages, like they should. From what I can tell, Chosen Few vol 1 is still tops. How about that Off The Wall vol 2? The original Texas Flashback series would be interesting too. And Pennsylvania Unknowns. And...

No surprise about the difference between Pebbles 9 and 10, I always felt Vol 10 was where the quality began to dip.

I'm not talking about this game here. I'm talking about the general importance that the ratings have in TBM. It's not what I expect form a profound work about any kind of subject.
Besides the ratings themselves are not relevant in any way, not for me personally at least. The cabinet itself is not of one opinion. So what you get is a number of personal opinions smeared into a grey sort of tendency hinting at the quality of a song. The worst that can happen is that anyone changes his own opinion about a piece of music because of that.
Fortunately fans of 60s garage punk are too stubborn a bunch of people to let that happen...

I didn't post in that thread, but a lot of the years given in GG's original draft (first post) are incorrect; in general they are 1-2 years too late. As an example, Psychedelic Unknowns came out in 1979 for a fact, since it was reviewed or at least mentioned in one of the earliest issues of Kicks magazine from that year. Pebbles vol 3 was also in '79. Boulders vol 1 I believe has a "1980" date on the sleeve, or is it "1979"? Anyway, easy to check.

The true professor of garage comps is Sylvain in Switzerland, not sure if he's in this forum though.
