Here's a few not remarked upon yet. Scum OF The Earth registered with MAJOR impact when they first appeared. The 3rd volume of N.E.T.S. seems to be much scarcer than the first two. Glimpses, IMO, present a much more coherent design aesthetic than musical consistency. Well, at a minimum let's just say they became marginally more befuddled, content wise, as the series, uh, progressed?

I believe you're incorrect re the 3rd volume of NETS. It's the only volume I've managed to find at a 'non-insane' price. I think vol. 2 is the tuffest to find.

Third Wave is the wrong group credit on the comp - "Dream" was the B side of a 1970 45 from the Morning After - A side is the much better "I Don't Need You Today" (listed in TBM). Third Wave is the name of the record label of that 45.

And I think it's about as Minnesota as Surprize (which is Pennsylvania). I'm pretty sure the guy I got my first copy from said it was NY, but I never confirmed that. There are no markings in the trailoff other than the record number (0027A/B), and the publishing company wasn't registered with BMI as of a few years ago. Label says "Copyright 70", so I'm guessing 1970, which would fit with the sound. A-side is I Don't Need You Today, and it's pretty good, too.

A case of uneven distribution maybe? Vol.3 I bough new at a reguar price in a Groningen shop in the mid 90s (they had several copies), Vol.1 crossed my way on a Berlin flea market years later for what I remember four times the price. Is it the other way round in the US?

Could well be, though as it was released a number of years after the first two volumes it may simply have flown below the radar for me. Maybe the majority were shipped to Europe? By the early 90's when, according to soybomb, N.E.T.S.3 was issued I was not pursuing comps with the fervor brought to the task in the early / mid eighties. Credit (?) Pebbles #127, Highs In The Mid Sixties vol. 39, EVA's regional comps featuring bands anywhere BUT from the region noted in the title, innumerable "garage" comps offering up a plethora of murkily transferred late 60's wah wah infused, rural stoner feedback laden biker vocal type "grooves" etc...and I just sort of fell out of it.

Happy to hear you scored a deal, though!

If you get your TBM copy out, you will see the Morning After were from Lake Walden, NY.;)

Whoa! Glad I tossed that "mystery" into my post in passing. Many thanks MTM!... I recently cracked another long-time comp mystery, and so the only one still on my radar is FRIDAYS KEEPERS "Take Me For A Ride" on Psych Unknowns 6.

Vol 1 is one of the best comps ever IMO. It came out just about the time I moved to Mass. One of my first goals was to get all the 45s (still missing the Shadows 4 45, as is everyone else....). Vol 2 may be just as good but by the time it came out I knew most of the songs so it never had the same impact. I got Vol 2 and Vol 3 basically as soon as they were available from the source.

I think I posted stories behind Chosen Few, NETS, Scum of the Earth, BFTG and other US comps from the time back on the old Garagepunk forum. I suppose I can go over the stuff again if needed.

S.O.T.E. originated in Ohio, no? Certainly enough collectors active there then to conjure those mondopieces...

did you get the weird (and useless) green cardboard magic cube that was originally offered with the flexi back then ? If not, I'll post some pics of it in my forthcoming AD post.

So that was the "mindblowing" insert? Being the simpleminded type I always thought it was a free trip and perfectly understood why mine no longer had it when purchased from the longhaired geezer on some 90s record-fair...

I had the "cube" but it's long gone. Impossible to fold together to actually resemble a steady cube btw. We always laughed about the fact that someone spent dough on that useless thing and pressed up the comp on flexi instead of just fork out for vinyl...

Yep. I still have the "record" which is great but I think I threw the cube away. I did manage to fold it properly (it needed an internal spring, like a rubber band or such) but when done it looked like a nail box, just a faceless green little paper box. It was not psychedelic. It didn't bring back memories of the "60s". One of the strangest, most inexplicable packaging gimmicks of all time. Add to the fact that some youngsters had misunderstood a vague phrase in the Magic Cube PR and believed that the "cube" was in fact a clandestine carrier for LSD and tried to get high by licking and chewing on it. True story.

I think we DO need that comp history so stories like this can go viral.

Given the Hamburg-address, I don't think this can be from 1986. Went to Tim's "Cool & Crazy" store here first in late 1990 and he hasnt been in town long before, I seem to remember. Or are you implying there were surplus records and he printed new sleeves w/ German address after moving over?

Stamp collector or not: very much enjoyed that, Sylvain. Looking forward to your Acid Dreams revelations!

'87 Tim lived in Morristown and early '88 he lived in Sweden. I think the german address should be from around '89 and Burbank address '88

Whoa! It exists in the corporeal world. Any info besides what the label provides? Killer studio psych... 10/10 on the Acid-O-Meter.

EDIT: 53 dollars? The Lord must have been in a jocular mode that week.

Anyone in possession of this? I can pay a lot more than $53 for a clean copy.

This is not a 10 in the World of Studio Psych - I'll keep that esteemed rating for "Trip #76 (Deep).
This track certainly doesn't approach that cailber. I'd give it a solid 6.
