Teenbeat Mayhem launch date......

missing TBM would be like goin to church without the bible... please count me in, Mike, Hardcover if possible.. can't wait for it!

cheers from Italy

Festive season rapidly approaching + another recession coming up = two reasons to think about allocating your hard earned cash to the right investments. On the top of most everybody's list here ranks TBM. Now of course you could wait until the Euro zone blows up and the $$ exchange rate takes a turn for the better, Mike. But you could also put the book out NOW while the saving account of some is still positive, right? Personally, I'd highly support the latter!

So just send him $125 now and you'll get it when it comes out. End of dilemma.;)

I too would be interested in your book Mike. It sounds like not only will it be a guide to records, labels and related info, but also a great read on the bands and info they've shared with you about their own personal experiences with "band life". I'm already convinced it will be a book that will be hard to put down once you open it.
In some of the other hobbies I'm involved with, there are "encyclpedias" and reference guides dedicated to early discs and cylinder recordings, music boxes, antique phonographs and such. They are always around 100-150 dollars, and that's IF you can FIND a copy. I'll be looking forward to procuring my own copy of TBM!

Thanks in advance Mike, for creating such a valuable book, not only for record collectors, but for dopes like me who just love the music and enjoy learning more about the bands and their discs.

Can you easily describe what it sounds like? I mean, is it a "Garage" sounding tune? Is it a 60's record?

MTM, any possibility of seeing this in 2012?

If cash is the issue, maybe a Kickstarter campaign is in order--it sure worked well for the Time Lag Bachs LP!

Happy Holidays, G45 Gang!

Please forgive the lack of commentary by me in this forum of G45 Central - I only like to post when I have something worthwhile to update.

I know you were hoping for a TeenBeat Mayhem! Christmas gift to yourselves, but good things come to those who continue to be patient.

We are almost done with page proofing for finalizing (toward getting the pdfs printer-ready). It has been very slow going, slower than I would like, but the benefits of slowness are reflected in the finished product.

14,185+ songs have been meticulously described (I call this grueling time-consuming project 'descripted') and rated on the 1 to 10 garage-o-meter scale. Just over 17,000 titles are listed in the book (there is a handy index at the back of the book, listing every tune by title).

TeenBeat Mayhem! spans 400 pages.

66 are full-color pages - 9 pages present selected array of pic sleeves and the remaining 57 color pages depict color label scans of the Top 1000 USA top garage songs, as tallied from the ratings project (8 years of work).
There are other features as well, including the first-ever accurate historical account of American teenaged inspired rock & roll (i.e, 'teenbeat) during the '60s, and how it has come to be celebrated worldwide to date - hopefully it will calm the queries and theories of questioning Axel somewhat;)

Time frame for publication (by my publishing company, more books are in process or in the works!) during the spring 2012. I'll have an official press release announcement around Feb/ March.

I'm working on a deal with a financial backer, which will eliminate the major headache (for me) of dealing with pre-orders. I'd rather / prefer to have the books printed and ready to go when accepting orders.
I'm not certain of cost yet but it will cost no less than $100 US dollars - the color pages and hard-cover (which looks fantastic, if I may boast) are a major portion of the cost of print production.

Over and Out!

MTM, thanks for the update. Cynically padding my message count has paid off in spades!

...and I'm totally with you on "vinyls," ha ha, tho' I expect we oldsters are losing this nomenclature skirmish. At least, no one has referenced the much-dreaded "T@TTYSHAKER."

"Vinyl" "45" "Record".... whatever, same thing!

"Tittyshaker" is annoying, because most, if not all the people you see at these events which spin those type of R&B records are men, I rarely see any chicks bringing any credence to the name.

I am guessing that name is in reference to Las Vegas strip clubs etc?

Mike the book plans all sound exciting, I can't wait.... it will be interesting to read about the "vinyls" haha

lack of patience is not a charge many here would plead guilty to.

Over and Out!

so you managed to collect all label-scans by now? Last time it seemed like a couple were still "in transit". but "last time" is a couple of months ago.

Time frame for publication (by my publishing company, more books are in process or in the works!) during the spring 2012.

More books by you? Or by the publishing company?

Very glad to hear you've opted for a hard cover!

Greg - We've created "mock"scans for the one-of-a kind acetate tracks that we were unable to obtain. I mean, how hard is it to construct a scan which uses a generic audiodisc label? I think we also have three acetate-only tunes that could not be reconstructed accurately, so Mark opted to use a blank label and typeset the details accordingly on the label. We were able to track down all official labels / 45s that required scans.

A second book is already completed, minus tweaking and implementing to a pro-layout program, but it will only appeal to TeenBeat Mayhem collector oriented diehards, those who want to know the entire rankings from #1 to 14,185 or so - it will list every rated song in descending order. Ranked by the mean along with the full-vote breakdown each song received. The book also has a cross-ref list by title, so you can find a specific song and the vote tally results. I doubt this would sell more than a couple hundred copies, so it will be limited. I know that if my bunch of favorite 60's garage songs failed to make the official Top 1000, I would want to know how they fared, and where they ranked overall. This is the book you would want if you're like me. It will run about 175 pages or so. Inexpensive, too, soft-cover type deal.

A third book in the works focuses on stories from interviews I have done - something that progresses deeper than my single chapter presentation in TeenBeat Mayhem, which uses snippets and quotes from group member accounts to illustrate situations and experiences on a more generalized level. I have things scattered about for this effort but I can't really work on it until I'm done selling tbm.

I've also had initial casual type discussions with a few folks about reprinting some older material in book form which was published elsewhere and is hard to find / out of print, etc. Lots of possibilities here.
One thing is for sure- if you only use a downloadable reader for your book reading diet, you'll want to ignore my efforts!

Is the smithsonian backing you? You're like a 21st century Harry Smith. Your research sounds spellbinding bu please don't do limited editions.. Everyone needs access to this.

No one is backing me except the G45 gang, I hope!

TeenBeat Mayhem won't be a limited edition unless people fail to pony up and buy out the 1st print run!
In theory, based upon my marketing of 20 years of promoting this work, those fanatics still alive (some close like-minded pals who contributed to this cause have passed on, alas) this thing should literally fly out the door in a manner of 60-90 days.

I don't have room here to store that many copies of boxes of books longer than, say, six months, so I would swing for a second printing as soon as the 1st printing sells out (no alteration or updating of contents tho). My marketing plan to hit libraries (major universities, and such) has already started.

The forthcoming website will feature the story of how TeenBeat Mayhem came to be as it is, with old examples of layouts (I had some pages on the old forum) and the trials and tribulations toward getting it done. The book itself makes mention of this, but not in detail. Depending on the design and how smooth things go, the inside story of tbm may shift to my Teenbeat Mayhem blog. Perhaps it may be better served on there, now that I think about it.
