The Beatles In Mono - vinyl box set

I am thinking of totally breaking my budget and buying this as well. If I do I will definitely buy it direct from Amazon as with something of this value I would not want to take any chances.

But having said that I have bought from other sellers via Amazon many times, most often Movie Mars and Import CDs and have never had a problem. I believe that Amazon does guarantee these sales as well.

If not buying directly from Amazon, Movie Mars has been my go-to seller for DVD's & common CD's for years (on Amazon and eBay). Never had a problem with them.

I'm still waffling on buying this, and if I do cave, it will be through Amazon directly.

Amazon used to have individual auction sellers way back around 1999-2000. I was one of them. It was all vintage stuff, but then they closed it off to sellers without a U.S. address for some odd reason. Then somewhere they relaxed that restriction and renamed things a Marketplace. I haven't thought about listing with them again though even with a U.S. address. I'd think they could/should limit it to things not available through Amazon itself and toss anyone off if there are significant customer complaints. I've bought from many sellers on Amazons Canada, U.S. and U.K., even Australia (for some old Ugly Things), guess I've been fairly lucky but I often suggest packaging concerns to them in advance. You know, 'could you use a bit of extra plastic/cardboard for me or extra padding'. There was a recent story on U.S. news about FedEx and other drivers smashing and bashing packages about. The cost of not treating employees better and they have unresolved festering frustrations?

I never had a problem with Amazon Marketplace. Sometimes it's significantly cheaper than Amazon itself, that's why I use it. Some of the sellers are big distributors anyway, so not much different from Amazon. Some of them are small dealers, pretty much like the usual ebay seller. Once I received a CD without booklet, sent it back and received full refund. Another time a CD box was smelling (and looking) as if it had been lying in an ashtray. Sent it back and got full refund, too.
You have to open a case, like on ebay, and usually the problem should be solved. I'm sure the record store in Sacramento will pay the refund.

In my earlier comment I said "mix". Of course it's new vinyl mastering. Anyone else compared the old vinyl to the new? I only heard "Help", maybe it's different with other albums. And maybe the new sound balance has a quality of its own that I didn't recognize.

So I sent into a record store and bought it there. The Internets can keep their seams splits.
And yeah, so far this sounds pretty great!

Am I the only forum member who doesn't like the Beatles?

Now if the Rolling Stones & Kinks got this treatment, I'd be interested!

I've always wondered how anybody with an interest in '60s music could not like The Beatles. Just curious...what are your reasons? I know many people that can't look beyond the hype/image and simply refuse the band could make excellent music as a result.

Yeah, I can't relate to the idea of not liking the Beatles but liking a whole genre of music that was hugely inspired by them (and their ilk). That is akin to liking a subway meatball sub but not liking Italian food.

If I'm being totally honest, I can really only think of two legitimate reason as to why I'm not a fan:
  1. I don't really care for harmony vocals.
  2. They just sound a little to clean/polished for my tastes.
I can actually think of more (admittedly) illegitimate reasons:
  1. As you mention, the hype has always been a big turn-off for me.
  2. I'm a big fan of Brian Jones era Rolling Stones, so the fact that the Beatles get way more attention has always bugged me (I suppose this is really related to the above).
  3. Reading Kicks magazine at a young/impressionable age.
  4. My 1st wife is a huge Beatles fan.

A well known garage collector and all around good guy once told me if someone says they don't like the Beatles, they're a liar or a phony..and most likely both, hahahah. I still think of that every time someone tells me they hate the Fabs!

I'm guessing said collector is not Tim W.

I didn't mean any offense to you when I said that, Down-n-out. I hope you didn't take any. It definitely wasn't Tim W! I couldn't imagine my house without all the Beatles albums. US and British lps all in mono and stereo. EP's, 45's etc.. There are very few songs of theirs I don't like at any given moment. Even the songs I'm not entirely fond of have something which captures my ears and draws me in. A perfect storm.

Heck no - no offense taken, whatsoever! I found your post quite entertaining, which is why I "liked" it. For better or worse, Tim W. had a big impact on my musical taste during my younger years. While I don't know this for a fact, I get the feeling he's not a Beatles fan. I mean, he doesn't even like the Yardbirds (or at least claims not to in liner notes). Even I can't swallow that Kool-Aid.

  1. I don't really care for harmony/unison vocals.

  1. Paul McCartney is a dofus
  2. I do not appreciate Merseybeat much, though there are of course exceptions.
  3. Paul McCartney is a twat.
  4. There is too much music out there that I have yet to hear

Not a big fan either. Hard to put my finger on it, except for the Macca/Sgt.Pepper/YellowSubmarine/mysticism nonsense. Just never clicked for me. Though does not mean I never listen to them. Rubber Soul/Revolver + selected tracks from the later period. I like John Lennon's voice a lot. But of course, I was born in 1972 and was not exposed to the phenomenon as a kid.

Paul McFartney is a dofus.

Outta interest.... how much is this box set??

there are better things to pay out for, the endless choice... do I want the Beatles Boxset or wait for a G45 beast??

I don't know about labelling the Beatles phenomenon as "hype". If there were elements of hype, it certainly wasn't the main story. Their music legitimately inspired/entertained the majority of the population of the western world, not just rock music fans.

My grandfather, who died of old age in 1972, liked their music.

The best writer who captures the excitement (not hype) of the early Beatles era is Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies, in Ugly Things magazine.
