What are you listening to and what do you have to say about it?

I've been listening to.

Sybille Baier - Colour Green
Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
The Baroques - Purple Day
Buffalo Springfield - Last Time Around
The Anthology of American Folk Music box set
The Red Crayola - Parable of Arable Land
The Higher State - Freakout at The Gallery

First of all: :)!
Then: I think I have most of it, if not all.
Then: in the end I will have to get it anyway. It's always the same...
Brian! Brian! Brian!
(when it comes to this guy, I'm just one of those screaming little girls, you know)

I have to say, the SMiLE two-CD set has been a HUGE disappointment. I am a Beach Boys fan, and Pet Sounds is an all-time favorite album...but this is a mish-mash of obviously VERY overrated sounds. To call it a masterpiece is beyond honest criticism. I liken it to the "music critics" that claim Forever Changes is better than Love's debut album. Ain't no way. I'm not knocking Forever Changes but I don't care how experimental or advanced it is; give me the first LP any day. Music needs to be enjoyed - not overanalyzed to the point where the enjoyment of listening isn't taken into consideration. That's what's missing from SMiLE. How many times will it get replayed? Not many...

Gin House Blues (the Bessie Smith song) in a speed-up version that might played by the Crawdaddys (the 80's band)...
It's only an mp3 without any info so I have no idea.
Can someone help?

I agree it's silly to call Smile a masterpiece, as it was never finished. And it is as silly to say it might have been a masterpiece.
As I said there is/was some kind of enjoyment in imagining a masterpiece (especially when reading Priore's book), putting it together in your head. But, of course, not everyone can relate to an enjoyment like that. Also, there can be enjoyment in listening to fragmentary music. I listened to the bootleg with outtakes more than once. It's a bit like soundtrack music, which I like a lot. I also love Smiley Smile, which is very fragmentary and hardly a masterpiece. It's kindergarten!
If you like Pet Sounds you might know how difficult it is to explain to anyone who doesn't like it. I will surely not try to explain Smile, but when I saw them perform it it was pretty ultimate, the Church of Pop, heaven, totally amazing. I saw Pet Sounds too, which was great, but a live copy of the original. Smile went beyond that. It was a masterpiece if there ever was one.
And Forever Changes? Experimental? Advanced? Who cares! It is a damn perfect pop album. If you're not into beautiful melody lines and such, just skip it. No need to compare it to the first album.
But in general, you're right, talk about masterpieces sucks.

The new Winning Sides [#3], all US like #2, pretty good stuff, only 5 out of 17 previously reissued. Also Revolucion Psicofasica, awesome comp of crude garage psych from Bolivia ('69-75... sounding more like 67-70)

Any real surprises? Always when I read other people's comments/reviews of comps they never point out singular cuts, does that mean it's all so-so? (not a dig at you Laurent)

Not a killer comp, but a definitely good one in my book; here's the track list

The Misfits - I'll Feel Better
Jim Curran and the Lonely Ones - Aren't You Happy?
The Nomads - Not For Me

Don't know if there would be any surprises for you, but from the Bury My Body #2 comp I think these are supercool (the entire A side plus 1):

The Torques- It's Me Not You
The Hard Times- You Couldn't Love Me
The Dynasty- I'm Crying
The Fairviews- Nightmares
The XL's- Ruined World
The Apostles- Help Me Find A Way
The Fogcutters- It's My World
The Sapiens- Love Ain't Making It No More
The Sapiens- Ask Yourself Why Babe

Even in the 80s things have been called "killer" which are not exactly killer to me, so it certainly is subjective. To me those cuts sound really fresh. Some of the more recent comps have that certain "freshness". It's maybe not the hard core edgy stuff that was en vogue in the 80s, but great songs just the same.
So, but, could there be surprises among those, or do you know them all?

To be more precise (if that helps):
The Torques have soulful vocals over a kinky riff. Probably great for the dancefloor.
The Hard Times' tune is killer. What style is it? Maybe a mix between Mersey beat and folk-rock, with an edge? Reminds me of "Stop!" by the Burgundy Runn.
The Dynasty's take on my favorite Animals tune is superb. Great energy.
"Nightmares" has been on Boulders. I suppose it's common knowledge here. If moody songs can be killer, this would be one. Great catchy melody. And great sound by the way. You rarely hear a bass line as punchy as that.
The XL's sound great as well. Refined harmony vocals on that beautiful moody punk ballad.
The Apostles nail the New England sound. But they're from Minnesota (if the info is correct). Great harmonies as well.
The Fogcutters' tune has great conscious lyrics and keeps ringing in my head: "You get born into this world and the rat race begins at the age of six..." Reminds me of "Country" by Joint Effort, but more up-tempo. Great souldful vocals. Deep stuff. Killer if you ask me.
The Sapiens do great folk-rock, not unlike the Blue Things. From New York it seems.

Axel, that's the kind of comment I meant. It invites to discussion and curiosity, rather than just reading listings of comps available. I've always wondered why garage comps don't get more detailed reviews in UT fer instance. We need more obsessive fans! (just don't bid on the same 45s as me;))

Of the above mentioned tracks on BMB#2 I only own the Torques 45. A blueprint for Billy Childish' career if there ever was one! The others sounds as flips to already compiled 45s, but I haven't checked. Hmm, maybe I should start buying comps again? That Hard Times sounded intriguing. And The Apostles 45 is great. Never picked that one up. The price annoyed me since it was quantity on it.

.

It's a problem of room as far as UT is concerned. And it's not just obsessive fans you need for what you want, , there's plenty here, it's obsessive fans with a lot of free time to do it...

Went to the St. Louis record show this past Sunday and picked up a gaggle of 45's. One has me especially intrigued.

Roger Binninghof - "Over My Head" (Minaret 122)

Anyone else have this? Cool, garagey tune. Hardly any mention of it at all on the net.

Edit: Here's a link to the tune.

I agree, because they probably get free copies and reviewers will no doubt be reluctant to give a bad review even if the release sucks!

As far as the few (very few) free copies I get from UT for reviews (usually 3 or 4 per issue, though I think I only got 2 for the last one), I gave bad reviews to many (and some good ones too). It's stupid not to be honest with things you love.

As a longtime reader of UT, bootlick reviews have NEVER been an issue with the magazine. UT's staff of reviewers do not have a problem with giving honest assessments of what they've been assigned to review.

On the other hand, the review section of Shindig comes off like a clique of drooling fanboys who dickride for everything; very few mixed or outright negative reviews there.

Exactly...I was not thinking about Ugly Things when I made my comment but Shindig magazine.
