The Monkees on Nickelodeon were my gateway drug in junior high back in '86 and '87. I was obsessed, buying up every single cassette I could get my hands on... especially all the cutout bin stuff.

Just about everything I've heard by The Monkees where Davey Jones has performed lead vocals is not my scene. However, everything else is pretty damn great. It would be easy to compile a 20 song killer comp of Monkees tunes (without including the hits) that would appeal to everyone on this Forum.

Recently I scored a copy of the guess who's third lp
It's Time, which I have been playing a lot the past few weeks.
It reminded me how many great songs they have in their early days and
it inspired me to look for their 45s too. I found a copy of all right, its my pride,
and believe me. The Johnny Kidd cover baby feelin was a faster and superior
version on the lp. I am on the lookout now for clock on the wall and If you
don't want me.

What kind of group harmony sound do you prefer?
To me, the best stuff is the downtempo ballads, by black groups, circa 1952-57.
I do tend to like those that have a bit of rock & roll tossed in as well.

greenfuzz, totally with you on 'She', definitely one of the best songs of the 60's/ever.... the call-and-response part in the bridge right before the organ solo is literally *breathtaking*! i have not heard all the Monkees stuff, but i've definitely liked everything i've ever heard by them and The Monkees/Rafaelson's 'Head' is one of my all time fave movies

Yup, same here. Charades version of Flamingo might be my all time have, haven't heard anything beat that yet. And the well-known I Only Have Eyes For You is SICK!

Yes, I like most everything by Sonny Til & The Orioles. Flamingos as well Lots of sounds released on the Chicago labels Chance, Blue Lake and Parrot also good.

For a rock & roll style doo-wop ballad, this has always been near the top for me - Connecticut group that had a bunch of releases stretching to 1971:

I like group sounds with a noirish flair:

..and a recently discovery, the Marquis' "Strange Is Love." I've had this record forever, but had it filed for its more standard flip, "Six Gun." It's getting a lot of spins these days.
