"The Only Girl" has a truly disturbing lyric. No wonder it was never released, I guess. The riff is a monster, rivals the Barons "Now You're Mine".

This song seems to be well regarded by the soul community, but ignored garage by fans, even though I'd classify it as 100% garage.

For me that sounds closer to Girlgroups than garage . It's a song I always liked , but it's very hard/expensive to find . BTW here is a clip of her doing the song on Shivaree

Of course you can do a garage type coverversion of this song , like this local band did a while ago . A tad to long , but still pretty decent .

Not sure the Mentalettes saw themselves as doing a "garaged-up" cover of this song: the band has more of an eighties neo-rock vibe to them (Think Devo / B-52's.) Personally, I find Hughes' version punkier. The Mentallettes version has a slight flippancy to it.

The main differences are typical of modern music vs '60s music :

'60s - more swing, looser, more bass, more spontaneity, more subtlety and mystery, richer tone, serious approach, predominantly original.
modern - more precision, faster pace, tighter, more treble, more rigidity, perfect tuning and timing, sterile tone, flippant approach, predominantly imitative.

Unfortunately, many of these factors are beyond the control of modern artists. For a start, the recording equipment, setting and techniques are so radically changed now. Second, the artists themselves have been exposed to so much audio garbage for their entire lives. Third, music is now just one of many pervasive, easily accessed forms of entertainment. In the '60s, it was the number one focus for artistic expression for young people.

This is just an okay instrumental, but what I'd like to know is did the Mysterians cover the Squires or did they both get the tune from an earlier source?

This is a new discovery for me from Heinz. Not his best, but I think it's still good. I realised while listening to it that the guitarist (Ritchie Blackmore) was the inspiration for Tony Barber.

Didn't know this one. So weird. "Writing" credits on the Question Mark release go to Kasenetz / Katz / Levine / Resnick... Yeah, right.

That Squires 45 must've had quite a few fans at the time. "Do You Have To Ask" by The Swinging Machine is also basically a re-write of it.

Although the clip below is from youtube, I actually discovered this on the artyfacts website The sound is better where I discovered it, so I'll link the sound file as well. (If this non-youtube find breaches the spirit of this thread, greenfuzz, I'll delete it.)

The thing that's bothering me about this song (apart from liking it), is that I'm sure it's a cover or re-write of something, but I can't place it.

The Sunsets record is pretty amazing for 1974 (the year of Diamond Dogs, Supertramp, Lambs Lying on Broadway and Houses of the Holy!)

Maybe you're thinking of the Seeds "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" or "Try To Understand" mixed with a faint hint of Oscar Hamod "No Chance Baby".
