I saw their reunion show in Boston. The woman playing bass (wife of guitarist) stood in front of a music stand reading the sheetmusic the entire show. She looked 80 years old.
Since she and her husband Eddie were in their 40s in the mid-60s, she was probably at least 70 indeed!

So the Caped Crusader/Boy Wonder label is coming out of retirement to release this fabulous Red Dogs 45, but the claim "unreleased....until now" seems disingenuous when this sounds like the same take that was on the Forgotten Things #2 comp. I know there's a milder version that's been known for years, can anyone clarify?

AI.Burnett1966 compiled Forgotten Things #2 so hopefully he can confirm, but I presume they’re the same. Caped Crusader/Boy Wonder always have great 45 presentations with lengthy notes so it’s worth a purchase regardless.

Yes they're the same songs, but I'm not sure about the chronology, I contacted Doug Cunningham of the Red Dogs back in Aug 2024 and stayed in contact with him until the comp release at the end of Sept 2025 and he never mentioned a 45 was being made in the meantime.
My guess is that Mark heard the tracks on Forgotten Things and contacted the Red Dogs to make a 45 of it in December, but I could be wrong. The unreleased tracks are known on the Audio House site for 15+ years so the time seems kind of close but maybe it's just a coincidence. Maybe he also means unreleased until now on single. I don't know.
Speaking of it, there are plenty of other unreleased tracks at Audio House and it would be awesome to see them out, their demented version of California Sun recorded in 1966 along with Open Your Box is fantastic!
The link for those who don't have it: http://audiohouse.cscnt.net/the_red_dogs.htm
And yes Caped Crusader always did a fantastic job, still worth grabbing imo

Thanks for the Audio House link, I haven't looked at that in years. It has an MP3 of the B-side as well, I'm Not Your Man, which has more of a British invasion vibe, plus there's a 3rd version of Open Your Box from 65 that's sort of between the other two, slower paced with a Sonics-like sax in the background! That version of California Sun is pretty wild too, agreed. The Boy Wonder 45 should be an essential purchase!

This is a different version to the one I ripped from another YouTube video some years ago. The one I have is qualified as 'Bowie Mix', and is more intense than the above version, which is obviously dubbed onto the video clip. You have the original (live?) album though, do you not?

No I don't have it. I didn't even know it exists. I stopped buying the Stooges in the mid 1980s. I did buy the complete Funhouse box set, whenever that came out. But that was the last one. In the right mood I still like them as much as ever, but 60s garage just completely took over for me. It's still my main musical interest, but not my only one any more. So what's that live album like? What's it called? Also I don't get how a live album could be known as the "Bowie mix" ? To me "Bowie mix" means the original Raw Power LP.

Fun House is my all-time fave album, Alice Cooper, Killer is #2. I bought the complete box on day one, but I was offered $400 for it a few years later and I sold it. Unbelievably, not one of the 7 cds has the original album in the original order. If it would have had the original album included in it's proper order, I would have kept it. Also, a lot of the alternate takes are not that different and you'd think there would be a lot of wacked out studio chatter, sadly, there isn't much.

The most amazing thing about the box set is that the best take is always the last take. They achieved perfection for each song and then just stopped.

I remember discussing 'Search and Destroy' with you a few years back, and you suggesting you had it on LP (or probably / possibly had it). Good point about the 'Bowie Mix'; but I don't see how a studio recording could possibly have the energy which comes through on the version I have, so I assume it's live.

'60s garage is also still my favourite genre, for the simple fact that it is superior to all other genres, but when the avalanche of new reissues turned to a trickle, I was obliged to look to other genres in order to satiate my voracious appetite for new songs.

Mark Prellberg supplied me with interesting details about the Red Dogs 45 discussed here a couple of days ago. There are indeed differences between the versions of the songs I compiled on Forgotten Things #2 and those on the 45.
On the version of "Open Your Box" I released, the vocals used to be buried under the guitar break when they come back at the end of the guitar solo, something Jerry Knaack said the band always wanted to improve and that was fixed on the 45.
As for "I'm Not Your Man", a triangle part played by Don, the drummer, was so buried in the mix it cannot be heard on the version I had. It was remastered to make it sound loud and clear.
The overall brightness of the recording was also enhanced, to give the record added punch. More reasons to get it, if that's even necessary!
Also, Mark's 45 project was born in March 2025 so no link with my comp, forgive my mistake

The live take is on the expanded 50th Raw Power anniversary set. This was also on a bootleg called Georgia Peaches - Live At Richards, Atlanta, GA, October 1973.

One additional tweak to Open Your Box on the vinyl was shortening the intro by 5 seconds; a 16 second intro seemed to have too much redundancy; the RED DOGS were A-OK with the edit

I found a digitised copy of the 50th Raw Power anniversary set on Spotify, and having listened to it, I've determined that the YouTube rip I have is actually the original unremastered version (the 50th... version is a 2023 remaster). The remastered version sounds like the engineer ran the cables through his ass, so I'll be sticking with the YouTube rip!
