Once again, time to go through your record in boxes and check your esnipe results and post you best and favorite acquisitions of 2011. Doesn't have to be garage, any thing is cool, even if it's not a record (poster? unreleased tape?)

Found some rarer ones but the coolest find was MYSTIC I Get So Disgusted VG++ to Near Mint (Frantic) for 50 cents at the GOODWILL Outlet by my house, under a huge pile of books. And it survived!!! 20 minutes later and it would have been in the compactor. Sold for $1800. Thanks Mikey;)

Pembrook LTD - Time Was Slow (a long sought 45 for me, albeit not great musically)
Foreign Blue Renaisance - Finding You (rare and great two sider soul 45 from greater Cleveland)
S**** and D********* - Cleveland funk/sweet soul acetate, excellent and undocumented
Bill Tatman and the Rampagers - one of the last 45s on my Ohio want list, I had a badly warped copy, got a clean one for 9.99
Invalids - another long time Ohio hold out crossed off
Societys Children - Ohio again, almost unknown (but not that great) for a whopping 5.99
Gentlemen Four - You can't keep a good man down (one of my most wanted soul 45s)
Thee Midniters - You're Gonna Make Me Cry (ditto) these last two cost me $ but far less than 'book value'
a few more Ohio garage acetates

A bunch of mid level northern soul 45s - $200-$300 titles - for a $1 or less, such as the Majestics, Van Dykes, Terry Callier

All Aussie garage/beat stuff

Atlantics - Ramrod - When I Look Into My Life
Barrington Davis - Spin - Raining Teardrops (mint unplayed)
Elois - In - By My Side (An original. Hammered but plays OK)
Flies - RCA - I'll Pass On By
Johnny Rebb & Atlantics - HMV - Pretty Thing
Moods - HMV - Cos Of You / Say Hello To Me
Morloch - RG - Every Night / I'm Feelin Sad (mint unplayed)
Pacifics - Sunshine - Lost My Baby
Roland Storm & the Epics - HMV - Shakin All Over
Russ Kennedy & the Little Wheels - Clarion - I've Been Watching You (the stalkers anthem!)
Sunsets - Festival - I Want Love
Vacant Lot - Columbia - Don't Let Me Sleep Too Long

plus quite a few more common ones & a couple that were so badly graded I sent them right back, including a copy of the Bitter Lemons 45 that was graded VG+ & looked & played like sandpaper.
I'm now 3 45s closer to one of my collecting goals, which is to own all the good 45s comped on Ugly Things vol 1 LP.

I picked up an acetate titled 'Welcome To The Fold' by The Soul Survivors. It was recorded in Hollywood and my guess is it's an unknown and undocumented song by The Poor (using the moniker they used in Colorado before heading to L.A.). Cost me a whopping $20.

Also picked up unknown and undocumented acetates by The 4/5ths (I believe from Utah but recorded in California), Little Caesar & The Romans, Baxter's Glass Eye, The Bards, The 13th Precinct, The Riddles and several others - including one garage monster by an unknown group. The top I paid for any one of these was $80.

Haven't "found" much out in the wilds, but these would be the top of the heap:

Both 45s purchased for around ten bucks:
George Blackwell "Can't Lose My Head" northern soul classic, sold for almost four figures to buy garage 45s!
Yvonne Vaughn "When You Gonna Tell Her about Me" another classic, girlie northern, two unplayed copies, one of which will be offered for set-sale in the coming weeks, along with some garage 45s. Stay tuned....

For garage 45s, other than picking up obscure and well-known things I need on the cheap, I did score one major want of mine in the non-online wilds, in excellent condition, from New England Proper - We The People "Always Lies" for $60 (price asked by seller).

Found a copy of "Call Me" by Eddie Bishop in a North Carolina Goodwill in October, and flipped it for around $135. It wasn't really my thing. Other than that, there were no really big wild finds here. My best pick-up of the year came just last week -- an unknown test pressing off eBay ($40 buy it now) that isn't wyld by any means, but influenced by '67 Brian Jones Rolling Stones, which I like muchly. Not for everyone, I'm sure, but I love it to pieces.

Supposedly this is Donna Fargo, using her real name. If I found two copies of that, it would be a skip-a-dee-doo-dah day!

I have a sort of strange one, I found a 1964 'D J' (for David Jacobs) magazine with features on Manchester's music scene and Jane Asher. Odd little magazine and probably won't find any other issues. It was the same size as Pop Weekly (or National Geographic without being as thick). Runner up aquisition is the first three Hullabaloo mags in top shape I guess. All the vinyl for the last while has been reissues.

hmmmm.... i got so many records that its hard to pinpoint one thats stands out. of the top of my head-
other half-mr pharmacist
initial shock-you got a hard time comin'
sons of adam 2 45s on decca
jay telfer-life, love & the pursuit of happiness
little boy blues- great train robbery
the nomads lp on point
quiet jungle-everything
the mood-who do you love
& a bunch of others i can't remember

This year’s highlights:

GARAGE: Gotta admit this isn’t something I hunt down on ebay and it does not turn up locally all that often. A weak list, especially considering this is a garage forum.2011 Garage finds.jpg

HOLLIE HELLEMS AND THE RHYTHM KINGS – Don’t Blame It On The Rain (Major 1015) Nice minor key’d garage by some country boys and thus a favorite because it was a total surprise. Came with the next record out of an estate sale just around the block…
POWERED BY LOVE – Powered by Love (Dome 505) Sold this off to a forum member, but probably my ‘big’ find of the year. Powered by fuzz might be a more apt title.
THE KINKS- I Took My Baby Home (Cameo) In some record room wheelin’ n’ dealin’ here at el Rancho Westex I traded for this in a swap that also netted the Wayne Walker discs on Chess below. Great record I would not have otherwise chased down.
THE TODES- Good Things (Emanon 102)

I also found a copy of THE KOALA lp on Capitol at a church garage sale.

SOUL n' R&B:
2011 Soul.jpg

LLOYD CHARMERS – Dollars and Bond (Strakers 76) Insanely fun ska/dancehall record that merges 007 with A Fistfull of Dollars. Genius. And one of my favorite finds of the whole year in the category of records I did not previously know.
THE YOUNGHEARTS- Little Togetherness (Canterbury 506) Fun soul record found beneath Powered by Love. Traded it for the Waylon Jennings and Jack Huddle 45s seen elsewhere in the list.
THE TRAITS – Too Good To Be True (Pacemaker 254) Wound up loving the heck outta this record. Same spot as Powered by Love, Hollie Hellems, and the Younghearts.
THE TRAVELERS – I Go For You (Andex 4033) West coast doo wop. Early Lou Rawls rekkid.
MADMAN JONES- Jess’ One Mo’ Time (Cameo 146) Clanging rhythm n' blues.
JOHNNY COOPER – Must You Be So Good (Challenge 5936) Just a huge wall of sound thing with a yell – not shout- along chorus.
RENE & RENE- Little Vagabond (Jox 041) Was cruising a CenTex Christmas festival/carnival/bazaar when I happened upon a stack o’ records that included this one. Best record I’ve heard by Rene & Rene and it wound up being one of my favorite fall finds.
TED TAYLOR- Somebody’s Always Trying (Okeh 7198) Same stack o’ records as Rene & Rene above. SHOUTING r&b.

COUNTRY & ROCKABILLY:
2011 Country Finds.jpg

WARREN SMITH – I’ve Got Love If You Want it (Sun 286) Pretty much sums up rockabilly. Came out of an incredible estate that featured two more copies of Sun 286, 3 Sun Elvi (plural for Elvis?), and a major personal want that I missed out on by being late to the sale and then missed out on a second time when it got sold off at the last second for a muchly reduced rate at the Austin Record Convention.
HAYDEN SMITH – Love My Baby (Phillips 3517) Nice rockabilly. From the same sale as the Warren Smith.
JIMMY LEE & WAYNE WALKER- Love Me (Chess 4863) Wild and wooly early stab at rockabilly from some country kids. The steel guitar on this thing be fierce!
WAYNE WALKER- Now Is The Time For Love (Chess 4860) Scored this a week or two into the new year and it remained a favorite through out the whole of 2011.
GLENN REEVES – That’ll Be Love (Republic 7121) Swift hillbilly
GEORGE JONES – a whole mess of his singles on Mercury.
MERLE HAGGARD – Skidrow (Tally 152) Merle’s first solo record and a candidate for the top 5 of the C45 should such a thing exist.
DONNY YOUNG – It’s Been A Long, Long Time For Me (Decca 30763) I’ve grabbed a number of great Johnny Paycheck 45s over the years, including two just this year. But this was my first record I’ve picked up under his kindasorta given name. Strong honky on both sides.

Local records up next....

LOCAL RECORDS:
Dean.JPG
DEAN BEARD – all three of his Atlantic 45s including “Rakin and Scrapin’” (eh) and “Party Party”(yeah!). This trio, along with others on this list, came from one INCREDIBLE collection full of killer records and autographs (5 or 6 from Elvis alone!) that had sat hidden in a closet since the 1960s.

2011 West Texas.jpg
SUNNY MOLINA WITH THE PACESETTERS – A Star of Wonder (La Discoteca 1001) Oddball 60s chicano doo wop outta Roswell, NM. Did not get the Don Julio seal of approval.
THE RAIDERS – Hocus Pocus (Andex 4015) Pulled two copies out of a junk shop from these Lubbock characters. Bass slapping rockabilly.
WAYLON JENNINGS- When Sin Stops (Brunswick) Weak record in my opinion. The Night Hawks original Hamilton label version of “When Sin Stops” is better. Based off this first record it’s amazing the guy ever became a star. Still… a grail of west Texas records.
RONNIE SMITH – My Babe (Hamilton 50003) First recording by Odessa rockabilly kid that later joined Waylon Jennings, Carl Bunch, and Tommy Allsup after Buddy died in the plane crash. Outta the closet collection like the Dean Beards.
JERRY ROBERTS – Little Bitty Lover (APT 25070) Norman Petty produced, early 60s Buddy Holly cop with a partial Fireballs backing that has escaped the sleuths. Turns out Jerry is the grandfather of one of my students and lives around the corner from me. WILD!
BILLY (THE) KIDD – Crazy Guitar (Jane 107) Actually the Cavaliers outta San Angelo, who later –in part- backed J. Frank Wilson on “Last Kiss”.
RED HAYS- A Satisfied Mind (Starday 164) From the closet stash and a big upgrade over a destroyed copy that I’ve had for a few years. Original waxing of the country standard from an Odessan.
RED MANSEL AND HIS HILLBILLY BOYS –I’ve Crossed You Off My List (Starday 523) Amarilllo country boy.
BUDDY SHAW – No More (Starday 618) Snyder kid.
DOROTHY AND JIMMY BLAKLEY – Slowpoke Rag (Starday 357) Despite the title this is a slowed up bopper with a sideways wiggle.
HARRY BRAY AND THE WHEELS – When Gabriel Blows His Horn (Twixt-Tween 1117) Post apocalyptic country grunge. With a drum machine. Likely recorded in a cellar at a car lot just south of Amarillo, Texas. Another Don Julio fave.
RAY RUSH – Can This Be Love (Aura 111) Same guy that produced Bubble Puppy and the Fanatics on Gina. This was a southeast Texas release prior to a national pick up on Parkway. But Ray was just as west Texan as he was east Texan when this was released. Amazingly gorgeous and atmospheric number that is as big as a hazed and dusky Texas horizon littered by buttes and caprock. Again… from the closet collection.
BOBBY FULLER AND THE FANATICS– Shakedown (Exeter 126) Great, fratty track.
THE FEATHERS – Dummy (Veep 1200) Abilene combo. One of my Miami Jeff’s favorite country-ish rekkids.
THE CIRCUS – Burn Witch Burn (Offe 101) Finding out that the Circus had west Texas – Odessa, even – roots was my personal discovery of the year. Larry Poynor is a hoot and a generous fellow to boot. And DeWayne Querico of the Bobby Fuller Four on drums. What a record!
BILLY DEE & SUGARBEAR AND THE COLORING BOOK – Everybody Says (TCB) Local white boy goes funky on this early ‘rap’ disc. Great stuff.
THE RENEGADES- Keep On Running (Souled Out) Glad to have only paid $5 for this. Very average Amarillo record.
BYRON – Love Me If You Want Me (Byron) Same dude partially responsible for the Clue outta Midland. Bluesy rock recorded while he was in San Marcos.

LP wise… Bobby Fuller Four on Mustang(killer lp!) and the first Tortilla Factory lp on GC records which is an in demand Tejano record because of the major funk number “Cookin’”.

The below are MAJOR regional wants I knocked off this year and except for the $1 KC Grand find they gobbled up some cash and trades.
Sue Black.jpg
SUE BLACK WITH THE KNIGHTSMEN – Pistol Packin’ Mama (Bocaldun 1005/1006) Incredible gal rocker backed with dreamy Chicano doo wop ballad. Las Cruces, NM band but an Odessa, Texas address on a label formerly based outta El Paso. It’s been a top want for 10+ years, but still on the hunt for an upgrade.

Starlight.JPG
JACK HUDDLE – Starlight (KAPP) Woulda rather had the original Petsey release of this bopper- which was found in the closet stash- but this will do.

Al\'s state line.JPG
DOUG BOWMAN AND THE ROAD RUNNERS – Al’s State Line (Chaparral 2094) Okie Dokie party-time country R&B championing this Hobbs, NM combo’s home base. It sounds like 2 or 3 songs are being played at once. A short stack o’ stock turned up this summer and I grabbed con mucho gusto.

KC Grande.jpg
K.C. GRAND AND THE SHADES- Lookie Lookie Lookie (Matt 003) Long time want and I had completely overlooked existing local stock. Then it got bought up a sold off last year. I was lucky enough to find a copy in a once-a-month-we’re-open-sorta antique store about 5 blocks from where it was recorded.

orville fox.jpg
ORVILLE FOX AND THE HARMONY MASTERS – Honey You Talk Too Much (Ellis 101) Midland country band pounds it up like Jerry Lee Lewis but with fiddle breaks and a great guitar break played on a Gibson gold top. Big HUGE loooooooong time want. Outta the closet collection.

Phillips Crazy.jpg
KEN COOK – Crazy Baby (Phllips 3534) I didn’t buy the closet collection, but I was there standing in an alley at dusk the first time that the purchaser went through it all. This was in the first fistful of 45s that was pulled and I came up just short of needing to change my pants when I saw it. HUGE want and I wound up trading a VG+ copy of Groovey Joe Poovey’s “10 Long Fingers” on Dixie to get it. The best Odessa rock n’ roll record, hands down… trumping even Peanuts Wilson’s mindblowing “Cast Iron Arm” in my opinion, which was also in the closet collection.

Tiger Boys.jpg
THE TIGER BOYS- I’m A Tiger (Galactic ) Scored the 45 offa ebay in crap shape and got a PS gratis in the mail from a forum member/lurker. North Texas Panhandle frattiness. Big want since first hearing about it a couple of years back.

Sounds of Night.jpg
SOUNDS OF NIGHT – Sorrow (Hap) Two-sided teenaged moodiness from the bustling outpost of Sterling City, Texas. Stories and photos to come at LoneStarStomp.

Still a ton o' big wants on the list... should be interesting to see what turns up in 2012!

HOLLIE HELLEMS AND THE RHYTHM KINGS – Don’t Blame It On The Rain (Major 1015) Nice minor key’d garage by some country boys and thus a favorite because it was a total surprise. Came with the next record out of an estate sale just around the block…/QUOTE]

I happen to find that one often, and several others by him- good low-fi Garage sounds, all on the Major label, Waynesboro, VA.

Well here is a dandy- found buried in an ebay auction last week- bunch of Doo-Wop 45's and general beat up hits, was a short typewritten note, that said, "...The Ames Brothers,Beaus of Beethovens,The Ink Spots..."
Supposedly according to a record price guide, only 100 of these were pressed, I did not think RCA would press up so few? Cool find to end the year! (although I did wind up with a dozen of other cool finds through out the year, including a Gene Vincent Hot Rod Gang EP, and several 500.00+ Northern Soul 45's that I moved quickly on ebay to buy more Rockabilly!

DSC01157.JPG

Another mojo cool- Mr. Lou Grillo walked into the Record Store, and introduced him self and handed me his card- an original card from The Young Tyrants! I know him from his classic Rochester, New York recording on the IN label (div. of Fine) and he worked for Tom @ The Bop Shop, one of the best Record Shops in all of the North-East. Mr. Grillo used to have about 20K 45's, and collected them for years until he recently send them to his brother and has gotten out of the hobby of collecting records! It was a real pleasure, and honor to meet him! So it ends my year with a fun and interesting story in the world of collecting 45's!DSC01159.JPG

I only had time to spend probably a couple of hours on eBay this whole year, and still I somehow managed to buy over 6,000 45s. Most of them in one collection I bought from a Sydney friend who was collecting for over 35 years since 1975. Thousands of original 50s and 60s r&b & soul which are nice to have, and about 500 60s garage 45s which I bought mainly for upgrades. I still haven't even had time to sort through them.

only a few Cool Ones from eBay this year

Indeed a great 45 but I don't think the quantity of 100 copies is correct. It's out'n about too much for it to ring true. The flip is a personal fave. Your copy looks like it shines brightly, better looking than mine.
