Happy Snaps

Here are some general instructions for the file name format. I try to keep the names simple for compatibility with older systems. If anyone has suggestions for improvements or alternatives, please let me know.

FORMAT:
Artist-SongTitle.jpg

No blank spaces between words. No "The" in the Artist name, but ok to use "The" within the song title. Always use "&" for the artist name, even if the label says "And The". No punctuation, except "&". Only letters A-Z and a-z, numbers 0-9, &, and the "-" (hyphen) character to separate artist and title. Use a capital letter for each new word. Use .jpg (lower case).

Here are examples :

The Byrds - "Mr. Tambourine Man" = Byrds-MrTambourineMan.jpg
Lyrics - "So What!!" = Lyrics-SoWhat.jpg
5 AM's - "Be My Baby" = 5AMs-BeMyBaby.jpg
Jim Edgar & The Roadrunners - "Apartment #9" = JimEdgar&Roadrunners-Apartment9.jpg
Vance Charles And The Sonics - "My Soul" = VanceCharles&Sonics-MySoul.jpg
Thirteenth Floor Elevators - "You're Gonna Miss Me" = ThirteenthFloorElevators-YoureGonnaMissMe.jpg

If the filename gets ridiculously long (more than 50 characters), trim some words from the title.

Personally, I prefer underscores to link the band name with title. Not only does it look neater, but it allows for hyphenated band names or titles while avoiding confusion; for example:

No-nâ-mee's-GottaHoldOn
vs
No-nâ-mee's_GottaHoldOn

or

OutlawBlues-Non-stopBlues
vs
OutlawBlues_Non-stopBlues

Hmmmm...perhaps an arm wrestle to decide the issue? Both opinions have merit but I think once a decision to change has been made, changing it back is just confusing. Also, why allow hyphens in the artist names and song titles, and not periods "." ? Or question marks "?" Or "#" hashtags? or exclamation marks "!" ? or commas "," ? or apostrophes " ' " ? When searching for a file, you might not know if it contains punctuation, or not.

Definitely don't need any phonetic symbols.
Regarding "&" - standardising to "&" avoids confusing "&" with "And", so it has a definite purpose.

OutlawBlues-NonStopBlues.jpg
Cole&Embers-HeyGirl.jpg

= fewest keystrokes, shortest filenames and simplest punctuation rules.

Definitely no arm wrestle! The last time I had an arm wrestle, I sustained an injury which took years to heal. Never again!
Yes, omitting hyphens in hyphenated names is the better solution. After working on discographies for three decades, my mind was stuck in a rut.

Daniel, w/o much of a clue in rg to database software I still find myself going back to the idea of a g45 db of garage 45s. Now that the initial option set up by Mark's former programmer seems off the table, would it be feasable to take your private database online and expand it to incorporate i.e. label shots? While it would be nice to have clean fotos of worthy labels, adding them to some kind of database would be much nicer.

The ultimate database would be something like iTunes as it is better at playing sound clips than Access - something Access was never designed for. That's actually my goal. Apart from that, I would give you the same answer as I gave Mark: it still needs a lot of work before it's ready for anyone. Furthermore, I'm not sure I'm ready to release something I've spent thousands of hours creating to the public. I'd rather give it to those who I think deserve it.

Just an update - I'm halfway through the letter "D" with the photos. Because of weird iPhone behaviour, I have to rotate each photo before uploading it, and save it as .jpg instead of Smart HDR. This adds considerably to the time it takes to do the shots. However I have already done more than 2,000 photos so it's coming along nicely. The "A"s and half the "B"s were done before I perfected my system, so I'm not sure if I will re-do those ones. I was holding the iPhone by hand at that stage, so the size and angle is a bit inconsistent. Now I have the iPhone clamped onto a stand.

I bought 15 records from Thomas Funk's recent eBay discount sale. They are the first 45s I have bought for more than a year (maybe a couple I've forgotten about?). They were all records that have proved incredibly elusive for many years except on the TF lists, and I finally gave in and bought them. When they arrive, I'll add them to the photo list.

Mark, isn't there a way to rotate them as a batch? Maybe there's a wizard in our crowd who could figure that out. Or maybe google can help.

I have photoshop, and it can do things in a batch. I've been trying to avoid learning how to do it, haha. So I've been using the iPhone to do the rotations one by one. But it is taking too long, so I'll have to get to grips with the photoshop process.

Mark, you can disable the Smart HDR settings on your phone easily. Go to Settings > Camera (you might have to scroll down quite a bit). You'll find a switch to turn off "Auto-HDR" there.
When you have transferred the files to your Mac, put them in a folder. Mark all files (cmd-A) and open them with the Preview app. Within the app, mark all files again (cmd-A) and use the little icon in the file header where you can rotate the images counterclockwise, all with one click. The rotation will be saved automatically upon closing.
Hit me up if this doesn't work or you need any help.

Kai, that sounds fantastic! If it works (I'm sure it will), you will have saved me probably 24 solid hours of boring drudgery!

Mark I could not attach pics in our pm so I have to do it this way. Hope it is of any help to you.

All the best Jim!

Label photos update : I have decided to re-do the letter "A" and half of "B". Because I did them first, they are not quite up to standard. The size and angle varies slightly, and when you zoom in you can see lots of dust on the vinyl. Unfortunately some of the "C" and "D" photos are also a bit dusty on the black vinyl areas. That doesn't really matter and it's too late to re-do them all. When the dust is very bad it's a bit ugly. I only noticed it after I viewed them on a large screen. So now I'm dusting off each 45 before I take the shot, starting with the letter "E".

With the various teething problems, I should be ready to upload letters A thru D, in a day or two.
