Insane Collection update

Ah, the "Bayou Jizz" surface scum, as some of us old timers call it....we spoke of this in another thread. That is the additive which was mixed in with the vinyl prior to pressing. It helped keep the vinyl biscuits from sticking to the stampers.
Over time, heat, humidity, etc cause the additive to be released from the vinyl and eventually shows itself as the scummy jizz. Lots of 45s stored down in the southern US suffer from this deposit.

Note the earlier mention of it in this thread.

Living in Houston, I am all too familiar with the haze. It will clean off. I use a VPI. I would suspect that in lieu of a vacuum method, any fluid heavy cleaning process will likely work similarly. If you do not clean it off, it will sound bad and the haze will come off on your needle but a fluid heavy cleaning of your needle with whatever stylus cleaner you have will get you back to square 1.

I don't mind the haze as that comes off. The pics are of the "VG+"record after it had been thoroughly cleaned. The groove damage is visible and sounds much worse than it looks...

Hadn't seen anyone else who dissatisfied with the condition if their purchases, so maybe mine was the exception. This was graded at VG+, although I am unsure how that was determined with the thick hazy layer coating the 45. This one must have been played using a nail for a stylus as the grooves are heavily damaged. The noise overpowers the music so bad in places that it completely drowns out the music. Almost like someone "erased" parts of the record! Ugh!

Not angry but very disappointed as I was happy to cross this off my list. Anyone want to help me out? Lol
How anyone can grade a record before cleaning it, blows my mind!:sneaky:

Yikes, that record looks like shit! And very far from vg+. I do not believe you should suck it up if you paid quite a bit for it. I think we can all agree that it is pretty great that Marek has agreed to give this forum first dibs. After all, it would have been a much quicker turnaround to dump the entire lot on eBay. Give and take the hassle that ensues. But if his vg+ grading looks like this…

Sorry to hear this Mike. Yeah, the film does a fine job hiding all sorts of record defects. I've cleaned quite a few store stock records, that were most likely never played before, but end up having scratches visible once the film is removed. Sometimes you can't remove all of the film either. It stains the vinyl, I guess.

Hopefully Marek is not playing these 45s on his player with the bad needle, as BossHoss noticed during his visit. If so, he could be damaging each 45 when it was fine as-is beforehand

Just heard back from Marek. He said 45's are only visually graded...
Record is going back to him on Monday. Disappointing as I thought I'd snagged a major want at a very nice price.

Marek's player doesn't damage the 45s. All the records I bought from him for my own collection were played first on his system. They are all perfectly ok on my system which is extremely critical and revealing.

I am still confident that most records will be found to be better than described, not worse than described. Sorry to hear that is not always the case, Monster Mike. Just to advise, I just played my m- copy of the Pirates, and it has super clear and punchy sound with no hiss or any other sonic problem.

Mine was better condition than described and arrived quickly so very pleased with it. Packaging was a bit flimsy and I paid $17 for $7.50 postage but I'm not going to grumble about it as it arrived safely and price was very fair.

i paid the same for the same postage, mine, Ex condition, had this kind of haze but after a good cleaning in my record machine is a real M- and plays perfectly.

With the avalanche of orders, Marek forgot to notify me that I had successfully reserved the Embermen V for $100. I benefitted from that oversight, as he had worked out some of the kinks in the system by the time I was notified. I was offered a choice of registered or 1st class uninsured with paypal gift option. I chose the cheap route. Marek charged me his cost for the postage. The 45 was potected by 4 sheets of cardboard but no box. He rotated the direction of the cardboard channels by 180 degrees for neighboring sheets. The sheets were cut larger than a 45 to offer some edge protection. The package & 45 arrived in pristine shape. He graded the 45 EX+. Anyone else would call it M-. I'm very happy with this transaction & 45. I think that buyers will be happy with the next batch as well.

The January batch will be up for sale very soon, in about 3 days. I will advise the exact time at least 24 hours before it goes up. I'll announce time details right here in this thread. I'll post the entire list here and also in the Set Sale Supermarket, at the same time, according to Marek's wishes. Some records may be offered in advance to people who have provided wantlists. I haven't seen the exact list myself yet, even though I did have a peek at the records a couple of weeks ago, and it did contain some wantlist items.

If you're interested, be sure to watch for the time details here in the Secret Society. Also, if you are offered a want list item, I'd appreciate a quick response because if you decide to pass on it, I'll include it in the regular sale list.
