Insane Collection update

Even now there are a few that I was maybe thinking about, and if the list was edited with the ones that sold removed or turned red or something - might be able to sell more of what is still available.

One solution, start everything high, top of the market prices, and the next day what's left is 10% off. The next day another 10% off, etc until its sold. In a matter of days everything will sell and the prices met should satisfy both seller and buyer. It will also slow down the rush.

The leftovers are supposed to be posted in the Set Sale supermarket forum, where anyone can see / purchase, even lurkers.

Postage for the US folks is either $38 = registered with paypal protection and a 5% fee added

or $23 = no registered and no paypal protection, plus you pay Marek as a gift with this option - no added 5%

Well, whether the increments are 1 day or more than one day, I think that the tiered approach is not a terrible one, though if the benefit of selling it on this board is to cut out bay's 10%, lowering the price by 10% may as well be replaced by parking it on eBay or discogs after it does not sell (in the public set sale area of the G45 board) for a week (or however long).

I would guess that a package with one 45 would likely weigh/cost the same(or similar) to ship as 3 or 4 or more 45s.... Much to my point that I would rather ship over a bunch than 1 at a time. Great to have these shipping quotes though!
As far as the "protection" angle, I would have more faith in a record collector doing right (just cause that is how we do) than Paypal having my back!

If the leftovers aren't discounted, many won't sell, even in the public Set Sale forum.

Starting high and discounting until sold will maximize the money raised and leave nothing unsold.

This seems high to me - if he's not incurring any fees, then shouldn't this only be postage cost? For that amount he should at least be able to insure it through a company like Shipsaver. This will kill off many smaller sales. Who's going to buy a $50 record if they have to include $23 more for at-own-risk shipping?

I was able to talk him down to $12. He seemed to be still including a paypal surcharge even when paying as friends & family. I was kind of annoyed by any talk of paypal fees. I've always considered them cost-of-doing-business. Or at the very least mention them up front.

Paypal might put a hold on his money - since he probably doesn't do a lot of on-line business, and he will be garnering huge sales from the lists.
If that occurs, guaranteed he will bail out of on-line selling.

People will buy the leftovers at non discounted rates. Not everyone has enough $$$ on hand at the time the list first hits. most of us have to decide which 45s to try and go after.
I might buy some leftovers depending on which ones are still available.
I would not lower prices until everyone has had a chance to view the entire sales list in the set sale forum.

As the records are not his, he might be adding in the cost of the plastic sleeves, cardboard mailers, stiffening boards, packing tape time in line at the post office and wading through emails from record collectors etc.. etc... All "cost of doing business" type things if it is a business, but if you are just helping a friend raise money for medical bills, the more you can minimize the overhead (and/or pass it on to the buyer) the more you maximize a buddy's ability to turn assets(45s) into cashes($$$).

Yeah, it is not like a lot of people spend as much time online (and more importantly, on a record board) as the handful of us commenting. Likewise, it is not like a lot of people spend as much time buying records as the handful of us commenting, so paying an extra $10-$25 for a nice copy of a great 45 (which their well rounded selves might never have seen for sale) does not seem too out of the realm of likelihood.

This is what transpired when Jorgen arranged his deal to act as a record pimp for the dispersion of the Hans Kesteloo 45 collection.

Hans originally wanted to sell the entire collection for 50K. I was sent a list (something like 80 one sided typed pages) of his entire 45 collection in 1992. i recall Bill N. asking me if I wanted to "go half" and buy the whole thing. Back then, 50K seemed a stretch. no internet, not as much competition, etc. Plus, Hans' grading could be better, or worse than advertised. A few of the choice gems started to depart; $500 for any 45 you desired on his list. I was stiffed on my top choices, but did get a M- Murphy & The mob, Fly By Nites, and one other disc. Hans then decided to stop allowing cherry picking of the rare 45s since he still wanted to unload everything at once.

A few years later Jorgen somehow managed to convince Hans to let him auction the rare 45s and set sale the rest. Jorgen's auctions at first listed 20-25 monsters at once. We had to decide what ones to go after. i maybe won only 1 disc in the bunch. Plus, his set sales /prices were lists of underpriced records, which allowed a few dealers to buy everything in one shot (Jorgen stated 5 45s of your choice at 60 SEK or some price).

He made a huge mistake by not parsing out the rarities over time. And underselling the lesser / midrange 45s fr too cheap.
Yes, I think Jorgen quickly ran out of steam concerning the Kesteloo collection. I remember Jorgen coming to the Austin show with a white 45s box from the HK collection. They were not the heavy weight ones, but decent titles. On the Saturday of the show, he ran around looking for other records and left the box under his table. On Sunday, he told me they weren't selling and asked me to buy the box at wholesale.

If too many payments come through with the Friends and Family gift option, Paypal will shut him down. :flush: This option gets major abuse and they are monitoring it. Be careful.

I was quoted $45 us for Registered Airmail one 45 Aus 2 New Zealand . It's not thrilling but given that I think we are all in agreement overall Pricing is good I'm not gonna quibble . I would hope to buy multiple titles of the future listings and hopefully pay around same price . If we did all order the same record/s I'd really like to see whats still available up on the Set Sale Forum . Personally I think it's way too early to be asking Marek to discount unsold titles !

Hopefully he can be talked into accepting banktransfers . $ 300 is the line there it stops making sense for me to use Paypal . First I'll have to pay a 3.6% fee to send via the friend option , then they use a crooked exchange rate from Euro to USD . The result is over 7% per transaction .

I've heard of people using the 'friends and family' to the point where some funds are held back, but I've never heard of any real trouble from it.

I've heard of PayPal holding funds for 21 days, I've never heard of 12-18 months.

I've been doing a lot of international shipping lately, all 1st class, and if it's over $200 I usually insure it at my own expense. Shipping costs are higher than they used to be, but with online discounts I can ship a 45 to Europe for $12. Seems like there should be something equivalent going on in Australia.

$45 US to ship one 45 Australia to New Zealand sounds kind of crazy to me. A seller shouldn't be profiting from the shipping cost, especially as there are no ebay fees to cover. It should be as close to exact as possible.

As for discounting, my suggestion was that he start his prices high and come down incrementally until the 45 sells, rather than try to guess a good selling price based on old auction results.

That's why I use my own credit card's exchange rate (that is a selectable option with PayPal). Overseas bank transfers involve relatively large fixed fees: at least $30 from Australia, and often about the same from the recipient's bank.
