Surprise, surprise - idle chatter about TBM

Thanks Frantic. I have heard of Wiki, but never used it. And, the pictures and songs I was asking about is at the end of the Dion and the Belmonts song after it quits playing. That's what I was trying to find again.

Tom, just click on the ''tube'' at the bottom of the box and it will bring you to where you can select the Dion songs you want.

Did you ever meet Del Shannon in person or concert back in the day?

killer prep-rock. I really dig those tracks. They'd deserve a proper release !

talking about weird acetates, do you know what's the real band and name of the song in that one ?

it can't be possible that their name is The Thorn and that by coincidence they have also a song of the same name as the "other" Thorns

Unfortunately no. He was a little earlier than me, but love his music.

vinyl, just listened to number 3. Did anyone say who that is" And, was that the Musitron or was Del's the Musitron? What is a Musitron just a brand name of a compact organ or something altogether different?

Tom from what I deciphered yesterday it is a Clavioline that was rewired and customised by Max Crook. The Musitron was never commercially made as a patent was impossible to get as all the parts were from other things. Nice bit of early recycling by Mr Crook.

Thanks for the info hichsville. I guess it's no wonder I didn't know what it was. But, how did it get the name Musitron if it was just pieces and parts of other stuff?

I have not heard from anyone here shedding any light on any of the songs I posted. So far nobody knows more than we do to date.

Only a small handful of records that I expected to see are omited. Only a handful of typos have been spotted. Over all an amazing acomplishment and I mean that sincerely. Of course we all knew that some discs would slip through the net. If anything, it is a small feather in my cap that I have something so local or obscure as to be unknown to collectors outside of my hometown. That's part of the fun of looking for them in TBM! There are also many song descriptions that I would disagree with, like something that is described as Merseybeat but sounds more like a homegrown imitation of the Everlys rather than recycled through Manchester or Liverpool. At least to me. But that's just a matter of opinion. And although there are song values that I would quibble with, over all I think it's about as good a system as your gonna have when several poeple are involved in assesing the overall quality of a song. My guess is that when Mike releases his next effort and reveals all the tallys, we'll find that some folks voted to our own tastes quite regularly and others the exact opposite. Overall though, LOVING THIS BOOK!

I tried to look up a group called Paraphernalia doing a cover of CCR's "It Came Out Of The Sky" b/w "Quicksand" in TBM but I couldn't find it. I think it was relased on Earth records #5001 from what little I've scaped up off the interent. I've never been able to date this record or find a label scan. Was it from 1970 or later? Any info much appreciated.

Given that "It Came Out Of The Sky" was released in late 1969, your guess of 1970 would be a good starting point.

Is this the same Paraphernalia that issued the 45 "Sunny Days (And Good Living)"?

According to Alec Palao's Mainstream liner notes, Paraphernalia is in actuality Savage Grace.

Different Recordings - Yes and No?

One thing that bothers me in TBM is a) sped up masters listed as different takes, and b) completely different recordings / versions that are not reviewed under the guise of 'already reviewed'.

The 'Chipmunk Effect' (sped up recordings) always annoyed me, from the first time I heard Hanky Panky when I was 10. Another prime example is Checkermen - Baby Send For Me. Both of these are obvious once you've heard the original releases. Less apparent (nothing to compare it with) is New Colony Six - I Confess (the band 'confessed').

A few pet peeves off the top of my head (I should take better notes).

The Spike Drivers - High Time is obviously the original OM master sped up for the Reprise release. "Why would anyone re-record a flip side?", and the answer is, "They didn't". I could never stand the Reprise version.

The Human Beingz 'My Generation' is a completely different recording than that on Elysian, and the important thing is that they are very different but both great (the Gateway has a killer bass line). But no review of the latter because "it's the same".

Kenny Wayne and the Kamotions - A Better Day's A Comin'. Again, the Scorpio release sounds sped up, and I suspect the Candy release to be the original master at the proper speed and it blows the socks off the 'early version'. Yes, the album was recorded circa '70, but was ABDAC? Sounds 'vintage' to me.

Cindermen - Don't Do It Some More. This song is about homosexual S&M, which is rather more obvious with the 'wacks' in the instrumentation in the original [superior] punk version. The vocals still spell it out for the discerning listener, but the second release was sped up and overdubbed including the new female screams. All to hide the true nature of the recording.

Okay, I have no proof for any of this, but my gut tells me so.

My guess is that the Gateway version doesn't have the talking at the beginning?

The Cindermen's "Don't Do It Some More" original version is completely different, as noted in TBM. It is not "sped up" with added screams. The original is a midtempo, shuffle-beat tempo. Version #2 is a re-recording, or completely different take. Pull out both 45s and listen for yourself.
Spikedrivers "High Time" are two different versions (OM and Reprise 45s). Have you listened to the original 45s?
As for the Human Beings "My Generation", we rated both but they scored the same. I didn't have room to note a description for the Gateway version. The song should have been listed in titlecase, not lowercase, however.

Yes, I have the original 45's for both versions of the Cindermen and The Spike Drivers. My observations were made based on direct comparison.

For the Gateway, you should have noted 5/ instead of / ; that would indicate it was rated.

Just noticed while listening to the "You're So Square" comp that there's a typo on the Trespassers name (Tress in the book). Also Mumbles Scott & The Esquires' "Searchin'" (re:Coasters) didn't get a note/description in the book. It's a pretty good British R&B style version.
