Not based on anything real or planned, I've been wondering recently what would constitute the best, most satisfactory method for reissuing 60s garage 45s. Here's what my personal pipe session conjured...

Teenbeat Mayhem Box Set (or could alternatively be G45 Box Set) consisting of

30 boxed sets mastered from original 45s in BHQS10, covering the entire TBM or G45 top 1000

each boxed set containing

* A gatefold double LP with liner notes and photos, 8 tracks from the TBM top 1000 (or the upcoming G45 list) on each of the 4 sides = 32 tracks
* The same 32 tracks issued as exact repro 45s, complete with flipsides (and a small "repro" id on the label)
* A CD of the same 32 tracks, possibly with a basic cardboard jacket, with a photo but no liners.

Don't get excited or anything. This is just a pipe dream. But I'd be interested to hear what people think.

Anyone of these suggestions is welcomed... my personal preference would be for a double LP box set with artwork, something that would maybe, be tucked away as a keepsake. Such a preponderance for a Teenbeat Mayhem or G45 list is mind-blowing.

I couldn't help get excited, but man I sure hope something like this get's put together. Sounds almost too good to be true:)

That sounds awesome!

Cool as hell concept but would never happen due to licensing hell. But let's say it did happen, There are a few LP releases I've seen that also come with a CD. CDs are so cheap to make so the cost to add it is only like $1 -$1.50 per disc. When I press a cd, the majority of the cost is for a 28 page full color booklet. But if it came with the LP you could just add the cd inside with a paper sleeve. But since it would never happen in a million years, it's just a thought. Unless of course you went the bootleg route.

Another way to do the same thing, but downsized and split in half, would be :

2 products

1 - a singles box containing 16 x (TBM or G45) repro 45s, a colour booklet and a CD

2 - a single LP of the same tracks (A-sides only), sold separately

There would need to be nearly 60 volumes of each, to cover the top 1000.

My choice would be:

* The same 32 tracks issued as exact repro 45s, complete with flipsides (and a small "repro" id on the label)..

Definitely the double LP option! Will probably never happen, but one can dream...

would love to see the double LP option see the light... and the whole project would look like a definitive series.

this however reminds me a lot of the Teenage Shutdown idea. There was 60 volumes planned, it's been a decade that the series has stopped around vol.15 or 16, and despite what we regulary hear thru the grapewine, there's no signs that the series will ever reach its final volume. But if it does, wouldn't this new project overlap TS releases, as well as BFTG (incl. the hypothetical upcoming vol.9) ?

oh well, BH's idea would anyway be a blast. I just can't understand the licensing thing would be such a hell, as warren, sundazed, norton, big beat etc seam to easily deal with that question.

Yeah it would overlap nearly everything known to man. But isn't perfection worth striving for?

hell yeah for sure

BH, you're thinking about something that would become a milestone if it happens to show up. My feeling is that if you don't do it, nobody else will do it, and it will only happen once rights get in the public domain, in about 50 years from now. I do believe that the licensing stuff shouldn't be something that stops you, there's probably solutions to find.

I would love to see double LPs with sleeves manufactured the old fashioned way, with heavy cardboard and a paper slick glued on the inside of the gatefold.

awesome.

BH, this is your holy mission. You have to do this !

I'd be down for the DBL LP option. Granted you say it's just a pipedream at this point but if you were to make it happen there's no doubt this would be a pretty awesome series.

My suggestion: If it DOES indeed happen, maybe offer a subscription service along the line of the old Sub Pop Singles Club; this way, no one misses out on getting each volume as they are released. You'll be saving people a lot of anxiety as they try to track down the volumes they don't have!

I guess that in this over-networked world this shouldn't be an issue. But there's also something that could be done: getting the funds before releasing the records. There's some web services for that matter. The project gets released only when there's enough people interested in getting a copy, and the copies are prepayed in advance.
From what I know, the market for 60s obscure stuff is quite dead since a few years now, and 60s comps ala Turn To Stone barely sell more than 500 copies over 2 or 3 years, whereas lim. 500 pressings were sold out in a couple of weeks in the 80s and the 90s. Sundazed's Dont Press Your Luck double LP was pressed at 1000 copies 4 years ago, and it's still not out of stock. But I guess that with a project like yours, it shouldn't be a problem to sell 1000 copies within a year. Alternatively, you can decide to reserve a wax edition to die-hard collectors with a limited run of 500 copies (that gonna be pre-sold on subscription even before they show up), and a non-limited version on CD.

Damn, that's not a pipedream, but something that could show up on summer 2013 !

Right. You have sites like Kickstarter and Pledge Music. I know that Time Lag used Kickstarter to finance the Out Of The Bachs vinyl reissue that came out last year. And many artists have used Pledge Music to finance some archival releases - Helios Creed is currently using it in order to finance a collection of unreleased Chrome material and Pete Ham's daughter is doing likewise to finance a 2 CD collection of Pete's songwriting demos from '66-'67.

Double LP would be perfect! What does your dream say about the content of the volumes? Based on states, style or time? Or just the TBM 1000 from 1 to 1000? Although it's just a dream, I like to dream in color... ;)
