What are you listening to and what do you have to say about it?

Billy Ward & the Dominoes : The Bells
1952 Federal 12114 - The Bells/Pedal Pushin' Papa
Halfway through the song I recognized the moment: it is time for a glass of port. Because this is one of those moments when you hear something for the first time that will accompany you for the rest of your life.

This 60 year old song is to me just as chilling and cheesy as Marble Orchard or Sleepy Hollow. I know next to nothing about the history of doo-wop, but I love the subtle air of comedy and drama. Ferlin Husky's pretty good at that too. And The Cramps, before they got all sexy and latex-y.

PS. Noirish flair, like the sound of that! What IS that? And can I have some more, pleeeeease?

The Checkers : Ghost Of My Baby
1953 King 4626 - Ghost Of My Baby/I Wanna Know
The bluesy Ghost Of My Baby is not as dramatic but what it lacks in drama it makes up with in heartfelt cries in the night. This is stuff you listen to when you drink your self to death. I'll save it for a rainy, rainy, very rainy day.
I don't know what to say, even if the lyrics are a bit simplistic - or just because they are - they move me and make me feel all serious and sad. *sob*

The Marquis : Strange Is Love
1959 Class 251 - Strange Is Love/Six Guns
You know the scary music of C.A. Quintet? Yeah? This is the same shit, different act. You know there's geniuses at work when they don't overwork the lyrics. Marquis wants to conduct to me the feeling of how strange love is. I close my eyes and see tentacles coming from the ground, close-up pictures of a beautiful woman with ruby lips, a magic night drenched in confusion and fear, fireworks and a sweaty Orson Welles in the background (a la Touch Of Evil).
It is sexy evil, it is brooding doom, it is calling you, luring you, warning you. The best of the bunch in this triple-aces little collection. Do I need to tell you that I downed the last of the port in one swipe while I sat there, staring into the wall, contemplating the strangeness of romance.
I haven't felt this bad since Jeff's Moody Monsters 2.

Dominic - I am eternally grateful. And this is why I love you guys - all of you. I owe you sooo much.

Thanks for the good words, LDP!

I just mean the darker, more echo-laden group sound.

Here's a few more I like:

..and this last one was recorded around '67 so probably should be called soul, but the vibe/formulation's always struck me as doo-wop:

Man, now I really need to get out of bed!
BTW, I shared that Marquis clip on FB and shocked one of my friends. You did a mighty good doo-wop deed last night, Brother Dominic. You thrust me forth! (Is that proper english?)

All awesome! You did it again Dominic!

Here's some of my faves:

The Dynamics : Misery

I total favorite on the Destination Frantic comp and guess if I almost swallowed my tongue when I found out about the even better original!

The Charades : Flamingo

I stumbled across this 'un about ten years ago and to me it was the greatest psychedelic moment ever. It is probably the one song I love the most in this world and prob the next too. I understand it was played at Lux's (R.I.P.) funeral.

Jackie & the Starlites : Valerie

Jackie is down on his knees and begging Valerie to please to come home. But she don't want him no more.
Tears are flowing on this traumatizing thriller of a song. Think soul can get deep? Try Deep Doo-Wop.

Donald Woods & the Bel-Aires : Death Of An Angel

Someone has died and the always concerned Doo-Wop society find it fit to get down on their knees and do a little crying. A LOT of crying. Next to hysterical crying. Chilling lyrics.

The Quotations : Imagination

Let's end on a good note. Happy sounds. Good times.

I've had a day listening to The Monkees and put together a collection of their lesser known cuts, previously unissued mixes and B-sides. I posted the MP3s in 320 kbps for download in the Secret Society Forum. I figured that out of the 180 members of G45 perhaps 50 would have access and out of those 50 maybe 5 people would be interested and download them.

Enter JoeyD, who was his brash normal self and decided to throw his rattle out of his pram. That guy really needs to take a chill pill. Anyway, I've heard that he's got big strong muscles like that Stretch Armstrong geezer from the 70s so I didn't really wanna mess with him.

So I decided to delete my post before he worked himself up into a rage.

If anyone wants the MP3s emailed to them send me a PM.

If this were Survivor he would get voted off the Island.

what's brash about saying "Since when has this become a illegal download site"? Monkees cd are readily available anywhere for sale. THIS IS NOT A ILLEGAL DOWNLOAD SITE! Do you know that Rhino Records and the watchers of all things MONKEES shut down these kinds of sites daily due to illegal downloads. That is one band you don't/label you don't mess with. Go buy the double deluxe cds, they are only around $15 on Amazon. It seems to me brash is someone who makes fun of someone else who's trying to help!!!

I don't think for one minute The Monkees F.B.I. investigators would have infiltrated the G45 'Secret Society' where I posted the download... Most of those cuts were taken from the now outta print 'Missing Links' CDs from the early 90s.

But, I'm sure you're right and that's why I removed the thread.....

p.s. It's great if you're able to get them all from the new double delux CDs. I don't keep up to date with Rhino releases.

You are dead wrong...G45 is a high profile site and Rhino would easily find illegal downloads of Monkees songs. As a matter of fact, why do you think I responded? I recieved a email from a friend at Rhino telling me about the MONKEES posts. Rather than get into a pissing match, I questioned why you put them up against G45 rules. Surely you don't want this site to end up like the one below, do you?

I have no desire to step into the middle of anything, but is there an FAQ area on this BB where rules are posted? I just poked around and couldn't find one.

I certainly do not want to take sides in this discussion but why didn't you just write that in the first place? If you stated that you'd received this e-mail and that there's a risk that the site is going to be shut down, then I'm sure that Colin would've taken the files down immediately. Makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, the intentions behind a statement often gets burried in the rhetoric one chooses to use.

Probably because the email I recieved mentioned nothing about shutting down the site. That would only happen if the site refused to remove the songs. And that would never happen on this site. Any time in the past that someone uploaded questionable songs and someone asked them to be removed...they were removed. It's called...communication.
