My 5-0 is this week, and I'm putting together some music for a bar-b-que party. Can you folks point me in the direction of some oddball rockin' obscuros from 1962? Thanks in advance.

the big one: RALPH NIELSEN & THE CHANCELLORS' 'SCREAM' :-)

some other weird rockin '62 greats:
George Darro & The Vi-Kings 'Twist Southern Style'
The Temptations (on Moon) 'Hey Bo Diddley'
Bunker Hill 'Red Riding Hood & The Wolf' and 'Hide & Go Seek (pt's 1 & 2)'
Thunder Rocks 'Oh My Linda'

theres tons more (especially great garage instrumentlal stuff) from that *awesome year*, but thats about all i can think of now, hope that helps, happy b-day!

I agree that Ralph Nielsen is the cream of the crop for 62. Other good ones from that year:

Bobby Fuller - Nervous Breakdown (Eastwood)
Mike & Ravens - I've Taken All I can (Empire)
Rumblers - I Don't Need You No More/Boss (Downey)
Fairlanes - The Dagwood (Minaret)
Lonnie Russ - My Wife Can't Cook (4J) - Soul
Donna Dee - Television (ABC-Paramount)

Where was I in 1962 ? In fourth grade & made hip to the soul 45s the Johnson Girls down the block had. Chess, Checker, Vee Jay, Okeh, Fire, Fury, Wand, Scepter, Modern, Specialty, yellow & black Atlantics, King, Federal, DeLuxe. For white girls they had it down - Dee Dee Sharp, the Orlons, James Brown & the Fabulous Flames, Tarheel Slim, Wilbert Harrison, Buster Brown, Chuck, Bo, Jimmy Reed, Major Lance, Chuck Jackson, Gene Chandler, Little Willie John, Hank Ballard, Freddie King, Etta James, B.B. King ... No Bobby Rydell, Fabian or Frankie Avalon for these chicks - they knew their stuff

They no doubt helped me on my road to ruin

I was nowhere... my dad was teaching a high school typing/business class in the east Oklahoma lowlands.

My mom was a student in his class.

How scandalous.

I was using the tag line from "American Graffitti", for all you young'uns. One of my two favorite films about 1962. "Animal House" is the other. "Diner" takes place around the same time.

this might not be a monster... but it's also a great song. feat. bobby fuller on drums.... got me a while to get this 45'...

Jerry Bright - Be Mine (Yucca) 62'

here is a video i found in the tube
