What are you listening to and what do you have to say about it?

Aren't you the same guy who compared the BEATLES to the AMERICAN BREED?
...and if you'd read my following comment you would also know that it was s JOKE. I know jokes can come across very weird in writing, but please... who would take such a statement seriously? But then again I know it can be fun to pretend to take jokes seriously just to be able to bash out a little ;)

Regarding Michigan Meltdown I think it would be possible to make a great comp with post garage/psych heavy bonehead 70's fuzz blasters without succumbing to include prog, horn rock, and what I hear as some kinda crude samba hippie rock (last two tracks). And that Lee Michaels cover doesn't really 'blow his version out of the water' - it's just treading water. Not that I love Lee Michaels, but his version does actually blast more.
I know The Orange Wedge are already comped to death, but surely there must be more of those kinda sounds from Michigan... right? From the top off my head I'm thinking for example The Zoo - 444.
Anyway - it's my personal, slightly disappointed, opinion of this comp. I love the first song, and I dig that space travel thing, Apparition is pretty good and song #1 on side two is great too. I may discover som more hidden gem on the comp, but IMO this is not really the 'satanic druggy heavy fuzz buster 70's bonehead' record I read about. It's a half baked comp with a few great cuts, a coupla so-so's and then a good portion sounding like records the zombies are throwing into graves on the BFTG sleeves. My 666 cents.

DEATH TO HALF-ASSERY!

A very funny recention Måns, jag laughed flera gånger! I do know of a tough-ass comp that is in the making right now, I hope that will be better.

DEATH TO FILLER-FLUFF!

Had The American Breed continued with the sound on their debut 45 they would have been less successful but a little more acceptable around here...;)

On a side note, this is something I thought you Joey of all people would respect, regardless of my personal opinion of said comp:
"After reading lotsa superlatives about the new Michigan Meltdown comp I bought a copy."
I supported the label, but then I didn't really like the product. It happens, so what? ;)

On to something completely different...
Now playing: The Pretty Things Philippe DeBarge LP on Ugly Things. This thing is The Bomb! Another GREAT release from UT!

Merry Xmas now to y'all!

Pat Kilroy - Light Of Day. Playing side 2 for the second time in a row right now. Amazing.

Think I'm gonna spin that New Age LP later...

Like every weekend, I'm listening to this week Dave the Spazz show on WFMU, but this week I was also enjoying the amazing Scream Loud/Fenton boxset that I hadn't play in a while.

Oh great, Now I'm wishing The New Age had've explored See Emily Play! Or John Coltrane... or Miles Davis... or... hmm, maybe Gabor Szabo... I'll have to look.

i'm listening to the german bonds-we are out of sight, just listened to the joy strings- everything gonna be hearing the phantom brothers- chicago next

I also dig the Philippe Debarge greatly. Bought it together with the Bachs some months ago. Both of them great albums in killer sound quality and beautiful thick cardboard sleeves. Both of them exemplary releases!

Didn't hear much about the Michigan Meltdown since the hopeful announcements in the forum some time ago. That already made me think it might probably not have turned out as good as expected. Too sad. A nice heavy dark fuzz monster comp would be great. But as already stated, it seems to be a rare breed.
Although not necessarily an American ;). Looking for that kind of thing I found that the Dutch were doing pretty good in the early 70s. The vocals are more often bearable (or good) compared to the usual hard rock screaking. Some great early 70s rock'n'roll there. But is it any wonder? Dutch rock'n'roll rules since 1966!!!

And: "High All The Time" is a great one! Got the re-release on Past & Present last year. Sounds fantastic!

OK, I recently got a box of (5) LP's from Norton mailorder. Here are some comments while I listen:

1. Chinese Rocks (Outhouse Records): Let me start off by saying I was dissapointed with this record before I even listened to it. Having taken two trips to China last year, I was very interested in finding any Chinese records from the 60's. However, I knew some thing called the "Cultural Revolution" made this unlikely. When I saw this, I jumped on it without doing any research. Well, when I saw the cover, the "sub-title" told me what was truly on the record: "60's Garage, Surf, Trash Rock 'N' Roll A Go Go From Southeast Asia." That's fine and all, but Southeast Asia is NOT China! So, what else can I tell you other than I am dissapointed? It's on Yellow Vinyl, which I find amusing, but some might find offensive. The cover has pictures of LP covers & 45 picture sleeves (not for every song, though, and some of which I don't think are even on the record). There is no information, whatsoever, other than band name & song title. No information on year recorded, or from what non-China country any of them are from. The songs are "fine". Nothing amazing and nothing horrible. It will probably sit in my collection, but honestly, I doubt I will play it much, except when I see it and go, "I haven't heard this in awhile - I wonder if it's any good."

2. Train To Nowhere! Unissued Sixties Garage Acetates/Volume Three (Norton Records): I don't think my local record store ever restocked these LP's after the initial order, so I ended up missing two of the five volumes of this excellent series.

Anyway, a detailed review of this record would be kinda pointless. I mean, the Thank You list reads like the member list of the G45 forum! Anyone on this forum who doesn't already own this, is at least aware of its existence, and what it contains. So, I will just make a couple comments.

This volume opens up with Woman by The Fanatics. I used to have this on a 7" - I think the label was called Caped Crusader? Well, that 7" never did much for me, and I ended up selling it long ago. I don't know if this is a different version, if the quality is better, if it's the fact that I replaced my stylus this morning, or I'm just smarter now, but this song kicks-ass! Can I say "ass" here?

Every song is great in its own way. This is the type of release that MUST be supported. Even if you don't own a turntable, spend the $10 and put it on the wall!

'Nuff said.

3. I've Had Enough! Unissued Sixties Garage Acetates/Volume Four (Norton Records): I don't think my local record store ever restocked these LP's after the initial order, so I ended up missing two of the five volumes of this excellent series.

This is the Special All New York Edition. Standouts include Gonna Find My Way by Jagged Edge. This song would fit perfectly on a Tell-Tale Hearts record. Also included is the 1st recording by Johnny Thunders!

Go buy every volume!

OK, I recently got a box of (5) LP's from Norton mailorder. Here are some comments while I listen:

4. The Sevens (Feathered Apple Records): The main thing I knew about The Sevens is that The Lyres covered a song of theirs called "Seven". Unfortunately, that song is not on here. I believe this is a reissue of their LP, and that "Seven" was on a 7". This is a pretty dang good record. In case that does not sound like high praise, let me tell you that I think there are very few GREAT 60's LP's. I definitely prefer my 60's music on 45's. This LP only has (3) covers - a pretty good ratio for a 60's LP. The covers are songs by The Animals, Them, and the Kinks. That should give you a pretty good idea of what they sound like.

With respect to packaging, instead of a standard LP cover, this comes in a foldover sleeve (like the original pressing of the 1st Motions LP). I don't know whether or not that is how this was originally released. The sleeve is stamped with a number, so this must be a limited release. Also included is a nice two-sided poster. One side is a picture of the band. The other side has more pictures, and the story of the band, which I will read tonight after finishing my chores.

I wouldn't call this a "must-have", but it certainly is not a waste of money. I think this is a licensed (read legit) reissue, which certainly makes it worth supporting if we want to continue to see legit releases.

5. The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators (Sundazed Music): I will apologize up-front, as some of my comments may not only shock, but even horrify some of you. Here goes. I "like" the 13th Floor Elevators. But I've never understood why they are worshipped by so many people who like alot of the same music as me. I mean - they're not The Sonics! And "You're Gonna Miss Me" is a GREAT song. But an electric jug - come on, man - throughout an entire LP?

I've never owned a copy of this LP until now. I think the copies I've heard through-out the years were all bootlegs from the 80's. The CD reissue which I dubbed from the library a couple years ago made me appreciate it a little bit more, but still...

Now I am listening to Sundazed's 180 gram MONO edition. And you know what - I WAS WRONG! This is a GREAT LP! I don't know if an original MONO copy in Mint condition sounds this good or not, but WOW! I'm not gonna go out and buy any of those box sets or anything, but this LP (in the proper format) is a MUST-OWN!
